The research interests of Marzocchella are:
- production
of biofuels by biotechnological routes. The activity develops along two
lines. The first regards butanol production by means of Clostridia. The
second, bio-oil extraction from microalgae cultivated in
photobioreactors.
- development
of biofilm reactors. The focus is on two/three-phases biofilm reactors.
The activity regards the relevance and characterization of the combined
effects of bioconversion process, transport phenomena and
hydrodynamics. Particular attention has also paid on dynamics of
three-phase bioreactors.
- bioconversion
by means of Pseudomonas sp. OX1 free and/or immobilized under
aerobic/anaerobic conditions. The activity regards the conversion of
aromatic (phenol) and polyaromatic (azo-dyes) species.
- bioremediation
of industrial wastewater streams. The activity regards the
bioremediation of polyphenols rich wastewaters by means of Pleurotus
ostreatus in three-phase airlift.
- bioadsoption
of organic dyes. The activity is focused on the characterization of dye
adsorption on inactivated fungus-biomass as regard both thermodynamic
and kinetic aspects.
- biofixation
of carbon dioxide. The activity is focused on the assessment of
performances and characterization of absorption unit of carbon dioxide
assisted by immobilised enzymes.
- hydrodynamics
of gas-solids, gas-liquid and gas-liquid-solids systems. The activity
is framed in the basic research carried out at the Department regarding
the multiphase investigations to support design and optimization of
unit operation apparatuses.
Marzocchella has
supervised research activities of about 100 graduating students in
Chemical Engineering, Management Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology
at the UNINA. He has supervised the research activity of several
students from EC Universities during their graduation thesis in Napoli.
He has been supervisor of 6 PhD students and co-supervisor of 5 PhD
students, one from the Deft University (The Netherlands).
Marzocchella has
been scientific responsible of research groups involved in national
projects (CNR and PRIN) and in investigations committed by industrial
patterns (NOVARTIS, ENEL, EURO-D, VAGO, …).
Results of the
scientific activity are reported in about 100 contributions, including
over 64 peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and book
chapters.
Marzocchella is co-author of three patents regarding:
1) an optical diagnostic system;
2) a continuous solids classification system;
3) a biotechnological process for wastewater remediation.
