Rules |
1) All PhD students are under the administrative responsibility of the University of Naples "Federico II". The PhD Office is located in Via G.C. Cortese 29, 80133 Napoli, Tel. 081 2537623. This office manages: the official procedure for the appointment, requests for documents, fellowships, official certificates etc. 2) The educational and scientific aspects of the doctorate are handled by the Academic Board. The contacts are: Coordinator: Prof. Pier Luca Maffettone, 0817682282. pierluca.maffettone@unina.it Student Representative: Luca Micoli, luca.micoli@hotmail.it 3) PhD Students should always contact the Coordinator for information regarding the activities, in particular the possibility of using the funds for the PhD (missions, conferences, etc..). 4) The Administrative Office of the Department of Chemical Engineering (first floor mezzanine of the building in Chemical Engineering) is responsible for administrative procedures regarding the mobility of PhD students. For any mission, whatever the financial fund is used, the student must fill forms that can be obtained by Mr. Antonio Cunzo - Administrative Office of the Department of Chemical Engineering. For missions: Mr. Antonio Cunzo, 0817682265, cunzo@unina.it 5) Attendance to PhD courses and seminars for doctoral students organized by the PhD Program in Chemical Engineering is mandatory, and PhD are required to sign a register. Such records shall be deposited, and the representative of the students will take care of its proper completion. 6) Each student carries out its activities under the direction of a supervisor. All students of I year must inform to the Coordinator, not later than May 15, of the name of the supervisor, the subject of his doctoral thesis, and the scientific committee. The Scientific Committee is composed of at least two experts which will focus on research work. They may not be part of the Board. 7) All doctoral students, in agreement with their suervisors, can develop activities external to this PhD program (eg, seminars, courses, workshops). This activity will be certified at the end of the PhD program through the award of academic credits. To obtain certification of such activities, PhD students must submit to the Coordinator: i) information concerning his activities (type, location, number of hours taken), ii) a certification of such activities (eg, letter from the teacher to demonstrate the frequency). To allow monitoring of all activities (including teaching), each student will compile a summary of the main products of its activity. This form (fac-simile) will be delivered to the coordinator at the end of each year (October 31). 8) The attendance certificates must be given to the Doctorate Office in order to regularly receive the Fellowship grant. The certificates regards two months (eg, delivery March 15 to certify the presence of January and February). All doctoral students must send to the Coordinator a certificate of attendance to the PhD course for every two months, signed by the Supervisor. The certificate must be received in time for the bi-monthly compilation of the attestation. The absence of a statement is tantamount to a declaration of non-presence, and therefore result in exclusion from the Doctorate. Students' representative will handle the collection and preparation of certificates of attendance. 9) The first and second year students organize a poster session on the first Wednesday of July. Each student must submit a poster presenting their activities. 10) The third year students present a seminar on their activities between January and May. The seminar is open to the public. Rules regarding the verification activities i) The doctoral thesis must be written in English. ii) No later than October 31 of each year, the Board has to decide on the admission of students to the next year. To enable the Board to express its opinion, all students must submit to the Coordinator (via e-mail) no later than October 20 the report on research, training and educational activities undertaken during the year (for the part on the research see also paragraphs 10, 11 and 12). iii) The third Friday of September, beside the Academic Board, the students of the first year must present a short seminar (10 min + 5 discussion) on the research activities of the first year. A written report (length ratio of ten to twenty pages) should be sent to the Supervisor and to the members of the Scientific Committee five days before the meeting. The seminar and the report will provide a framework for the problem subject of the dissertation and a work plan of the research activity. It is the responsibility of the students to ensure that members of the Scientific Committee are present at the meeting to express their opinions verbally or in their absence, to send a written opinion (maximum one page) to the Coordinator the day before to meeting. The opinions of the Supervisor and of the Scientific Committee will determine the decision of the Board to admit the student the following year iv) The fourth Friday of September, beside the Academic Board, the students of the second year must present a seminar (20 min + 5 discussion) on the research activities of the first two years. A written report (length indicative of twenty to forty pages) should be sent to Supervisors and members of the Scientific Committee five days before the meeting. The seminar and the report will highlight the progress of the dissertation and main results. It is the responsibility of students to ensure that members of the Scientific Committee are present at the meetingto express their opinions verbally or in their absence, to send a written opinion (maximum one page) to the Coordinator the day before to meeting. The opinion of the Supervisor and of the Scientific Committee will determine the decision of the Board to admit the student the following year. v) The fourth Friday in October, beside the Academic Board, the students of the third year must present a seminar (25 min + 5 discussion) on the research activities performed during the three years. The Supervisor and of the Scientific Committee decides on admission to the final exam on the second Friday of September. The draft of the dissertation must be given to members of the Scientific Committeeby the fourth Friday in September This draft of the thesis will be also sent to an external referee. It is the responsibility of students to ensure that the Supervisor and members of the Scientific Committee attend the meeting or send a written assessment (maximum one page) to the Coordinator the day before the meeting. The Board heard the comments of the Supervisor, of the Scientific Committee and of the Referee decides on the admission of the student final examination which will issue the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering. |
