Walter de Donato received his M.S. degree in computer engineering in 2006 from the from the University of Napoli Federico II, Italy. Since 2006 he is a member of the Traffic research group, part of the larger COMICS (COMputers for Interaction and CommunicationS) group directed by Prof. Giorgio Ventre at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies of University of Napoli "Federico II". In 2011 he received his Ph.D. in computer engineering and systems from the same University, where he currently works as a Post-Doc. From February to July 2010 he visited the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology of Atlanta, Georgia, USA, working on the evaluation of broadband access network performance from the home gateway point of view and founding the BISmark project. Since July 2012 he is also research and development manager at Seven One Solution.

His research activity mainly concerns methodologies, techniques, and distributed architectures for measuring, analyzing, classifying, and monitoring network traffic and also covers the following topics: network topology discovery and mapping, Linux-based embedded systems, network processor architectures, and content distribution networks. Such activity has been conducted in the context of international collaborations with several research groups.

Walter de Donato has co-authored more than 12 publications on international journals (Communications of the ACM, IEEE Computer Networks) and conference proceedings (SIGCOMM, PAM, Globecom, ...), and he is co-author of a patent pending. He has received several awards for his research activities: in November 2011 he was awarded the Technologybiz Endorsement Award; in 2012 one of his papers have been awarded the IRTF ANRP (Applied Networking Research Prize), he was awarded the Best Poster award at SIGCOMM and the ETIC AICA-Rotary award.

He closely cooperates with Antonio Pescapè, Alessio Botta, Alberto Dainotti, Giuseppe Aceto and Pietro Marchetta
He is member of IEEE Communications Society and ACM.
